Already, we had been in Huancayo for 3 days now & like always, I have the same idea- walk or use any of the typical public transportation. It is better access & provides a deeper understanding of the city or town along with everything else that you happen to encounter. We don’t take taxis nor do we stay in hotels because it separates us from the existential way of living & of course, more money. It would mean less days wherever we travel so we choose the same measure with the food-the same with everything & compare it to extra days of travel or days of gold. On this morning, we were ready to go to Cochas but first, breakfast with the family (by the way, they are great) & off to the bus stop… There, we will find different forms of transportation such as “custers” (cheaper but more time) or “collectivos” (faster & more expensive station wagons). I asked Tiffany, “what do you think?” & obviously, we decided to travel by CUSTER, yee haw!!! No, we do not have regrets-we never have regrets.

On the road to Cochas I had a magnificent idea to ask the time from a man sitting to my right. He was traveling alone & had a very fragile aspect. He was wearing an antique blue sweater but impeccable & of course, a typical hat that fit like a ring on the finger. He said it was 10:35 in the morning & I immediately asked, how soon will we be there? He said only 10 or 15 minutes. Later, he asked if we were looking for mate burilados & if so, he kindly suggested that we visit his home/business where he & his family have been doing this all their life. I had the data of a famous artisan that my friend in Huancayo had given me but now, I have changed my mind. In this case, I felt that with Mr Pedro Veli, we would find the perfect extract of this town that has more than 100 years of developing into to this spectacular type of handicraft from Peru. He agreed to an interview & we took the road to his place.

Mr. Pedro Veli Alfaro lives in Cochas Chico. In this same town, he was born, as well as his parents, grandparents, great grandparents, his children & grandchildren. It is a long trajectory of family in this small town. He has 6 children & 10 grandchildren, all of which practice the same art (gourd carving). The youngest is 7 years old but she began when she was 5. As far as Mr Veli can recollect, the history started more or less in the year 1877 when his grandfather Felipe Alfaro dedicated himself to the elaboration & commercialization of this famous handicraft. From then until now the mate (gourd) is brought from Piura, totally dry & ready to carve. They sketch, carve, burn with a smoldering stick to color the carving, hollow & clean. Originally, it was commercialized in La Oroya by the “gringo” miners & from others passing through town. Later, in the year 1946 the mate burliados began to sell at the Sunday Fair in Huancayo. At this time, Mr Veli was 5 years old & was already working with the mates (gourds). Now, after 65 years they sell globally & have brought the production & exportation to unimaginable levels.
Like all popular art, where one expresses graphically the reality, customs & day-to-day living, the mate burilado is not without exception. I believe that it is one of the clearer forms for us to see their past reality & to clearly understand the existential importance these small mountain towns. We are able to see up close their parties, their beliefs, their love, & devotion to the nature but mostly, about all their gratefulness & tribute to the life.

Don Veli is dedicated to the development of the ”traditional mate”. He is one of the artists that have preserved the popular ancestral tradition. Never, has he left the pure & conceptual style. His work illustrates millimeter by millimeter his quality, like artisan & human being. His commercial themes are necessary to drive the rest of the family & really, they drive well. We had the luck of seeing his 2 granddaughters working in which they only use 3 simple tools & fire. Without a doubt they have constituted a system & production series that even the Japanese won’t believe their eyes!!!

Ya teníamos alrededor de tres días en Huancayo. Normalmente, tengo la idea que en la calle, caminando y usando todo tipo de transporte. Es como realmente tienes acceso y conoces la verdad de la ciudad o pueblo en el que te encuentras. No suelo tomar taxi ni ir a hoteles porque eso me resta vivencias y por supuesto dinero. Lo que equivale a días menos de estadía y lo mismo con la comida, lo mismo con todo, todo es medido y comparado a días extra de viaje o sea días de oro. Esa mañana estaba todo listo para ir a Cochas y así fue, desayuno con los tios (dicho sea de paso son buenísimos) y al paradero …. Ya en el paradero era o Custer (mas barato pero mas tiempo) o colectivo (carros station wagon mas caros y rápidos pero con timón cambiado) le pregunte a Tiffany, nos miramos y obviamente decidimos viajar en CUSTER hi ja!. No nos arrepentimos, nunca nos arrepentimos.

Ya en camino a Cochas tuve la magnifica idea de preguntarle la hora a un señor sentado a mi derecha. Viajaba solo y con un aspecto muy frágil que llevaba puesta una chompa azul muy antigua pero a la vez impecable y por supuesto un sombrero típico que le quedaba como anillo al dedo. Me dijo son las 10:35 de la mañana he inmediatamente le pregunte si faltaba poco para Cochas, el respondió que solo 10 o 15 minutos. Luego el pregunto si yo andaba en busca de mates burilados así que le comente que así era entonces el me pidió muy amablemente visitar su casa-taller ya que el y su familia hacen esto de toda la vida; yo tenia el dato de un matero famoso que me dio un amigo en Huancayo y al que realmente hice caso omiso ya que con don Pedro Veli sentí que había encontrado el extracto perfecto de este pueblo que por mas de 100 años viene desarrollando este espectacular genero artesanal del Perú y así fue accedió a la entrevista y fuimos camino a su casa-taller.

Don Pedro Veli Alfaro vive en Cochas Chico desde que nació y allí nacieron sus padres, abuelos y bisabuelos, también sus hijos y nietos , larga trayectoria de la familia en pequeño pueblo. El ahora tiene 6 hijos con 10 nietos y de los cuales todos burilan, el menor tiene 7 años y burila desde los 5. La historia empieza mas o menos por 1,877 fecha que don Pedro aun tiene en la memoria colectiva de la familia ya que desde entonces el abuelo don Felipe Alfaro ya se dedicaba a la elaboración y comercialización de la famosa artesanía. Desde ese entonces y hasta ahora el mate llegaba y llega desde Piura, totalmente seco y listo para burilar; se dibuja, burila, quema, vacía (quitar lo quemado) y se pule. Una vez listo se comercializaba en La Oroya a los gringos mineros y demás forasteros. Luego por el año 1946 se empezó a vender en la feria dominical de Huancayo y para ese entonces don Pedro ya tenia 5 años y un par trabajando ya con mates. Ahora y desde los años ’70 el mate burilado se vende a nivel mundial y a llegado a niveles de producción y exportación inimaginables.

Como todo arte popular donde se expresa gráficamente la realidad, costumbres y DIA a DIA de los pueblos el mate burilado no es para nada una excepción y por todo lo contrario creo que es una de las formas mas claras de poder ver nuestra realidad pasada, de conocer claramente todas las vivencias importantes que regían los pueblos de la sierra y sobre todo poder ver de cerca sus fiestas, sus creencias, su amor y devoción a la naturaleza pero sobre todo su agradecimiento y tributo a la vida.

Don Pedro a dedicado su vida al desarrollo del “mate tradicional”, el es uno de los artistas que preservan el arte popular tradicional ancestral, el no ha dejado nunca su estilo puro y conceptual y de hecho sus obras demuestran milímetro por milímetro su calidad como artesano y como ser humano. El tema comercial y necesario lo maneja el resto de la familia y realmente lo manejan bien, tuvimos la suerte de ver a dos de sus nietas trabajando y sin dudas han constituido un sistema de trabajo en equipo y con una producción en serie que ni los japoneses lo creerían viendo que solo usan 3 herramientas simples y fuego.

CHOLEDO EN CHOLYWOOD!!!!

Acabo de escuchar a Toledo y realmente que cholo pa power, casi me convence! No votare ni votaria por el como proximo presidente del Peru aunque se reconocer que su criollismo lo ha llevado a donde esta ahora. Ese AL PERU NO LO PARA NADIE CARAJO ! es su punto de acero, con esa frase se comio al pueblo y es que el Peru es super chifa, criollo, achorao, el Peru es emprendedor y los emprendedores son asi, CHICHA!

Solo hace falta salir a la calle y mirar para darse cuenta de nuestra realidad, subir a un par de combis con ruta al Centro de Lima te hace un resumen claro de lo que significa PERU! Sus colores, olores, gustos, disgustos, libertades, temores y espiritu hacen de nuestra tierra el arcoiris que ya los Incas habian imaginado.

Toledo para pena mia sera presidente y el Peru para alegria mia seguira aqui!
